Kidneys and ureters combine to form the upper urinary tract in the body. Pyelonephritis is the collective term given to the infections of the upper urinary tract. It is usually involved with the kidneys. The bladder and urethra constitutes the lower urinary tract and the infection of this tract is known as urethritis which mostly affects the urethra. The infection which results in the bladder is known as cystitis.
There are also healthy urinary tract infections which are simple and those which do not spread to other parts or areas of the body. These are not harmful and can be easily treated too. America is the country which is known for urinary tract infections. It is estimated it accounts for more than seven million medical office and hospital visits per year. Urinary tract infections are seen to be more common in adults than in children even though it accounts for almost two percent in children. Even though the percent is very small, infection in children are referred to as very serious and should take medical advice as soon as possible.
Under a study it is proven that those children who have the habit of bedwetting problems are most likely to develop UTI. In considering the sexes, females are more likely to develop UTI than males. But even then the male UTI problems are referred to be more serious than females and medications should be taken into consideration immediately and seriously. It is proven that about forty percent of women and twelve percent of men should have experienced UTI in their walk of life at any instance.
Urine is sterile in normal healthy body. With infection, it causes bacteria which gets into the urine and also starts to grow. At the opening of the urethra the infection generally starts and it follows upwards into the urinary tract and it results in infecting all that comes in its way.
The causative agent of urinary tract infection is Escherichia coli which are also known as E.coli. It is the bacteria that live in the colon. Almost ninety percent of the uncomplicated infection is caused by E.coli. The bacteria usually enter into the opening of the urethra through the anal part due to poor hygienic conditions and unhealthy life. Another major cause of urinary tract infections are known to be sexual intercourse which in an unhealthy way. About ninety percent of the uncomplicated infections are caused by E.coli. The major way of flushing out the bacteria from the body is by emptying the bladder.
The urinary tract infection is said to be a self limiting disease at times and could be cured by simple medications with medical advice by physicians.
