Cystectomy shows various results for different people and it is not the only treatment for everyone and would not be the preferred opinion for all. For those having superficial tumours, conservative treatment would be preferable which might respond in a much better way. In Cystectomy the patient is administered under regular anesthesia as it is a major surgical option. A small incision is made on the lower abdomen.
After the incision the ureters are found, tied and even cut. For the removal process, ureters which are connected to the bladders and then to the kidneys are cut to free them and thus removal process is done. After freeing the bladder and other adjacent organs are removed. Along with the bladder, the prostate is removed in case of male patients. In females, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and parts of the vagina are also removed along with the process of bladder removal.
In a healthy person, the bladder collects urine from the kidneys for the process of micturation at the later time. So as this is the routine adopted, with the removal of bladder it is very important for the doctors to implement an alternative procedure to remove urine from the body. Usually the procedure adopted is the small portion of the small intestine is removed, cleaned and even tied at one end form a tube through which excretion could take place. Meanwhile, the other end is used to form the stoma which is known as the opening along the abdominal wall to the outside of the body. In this procedure, the patient has to wear a bag for the collection of urine.
Before initiating the process, the patient is let to know about the entire process and also about the location of stoma on the body and also tells them how it will look like. The patient is also trained about the care that has to be done for the stoma and the bag. For such procedures, counseling is done and a period of fasting is adopted as well as enema is given.
After successful operation procedure, the patient is allowed to depend on fluid based nutritional drinks and is continues in the same manner until the intestine starts to function in the proper way. Antibiotics are administered to prevent the infection in the incision area. As the organ from a body is removed, there would surely be lifestyle changes after the operation.
In general, women are infertile due to the removal of uterus and ovaries. In case of males, they become impotent as the nerves which control the erection of the penis are cut during the removal process of the bladder. After the procedure, people are made to wear bags around their waist for proper collection of urine which is hidden inside the clothes.
