Rashes are not dangerous in itself but self diagnosis is also not advisable. A doctor should be the one to properly evaluate a rash eruption. He is in the best position to determine the rash type as well as prescribe proper treatment for it. A doctor will be the one to tell you that those scaly patches of skin you have that are not due to any type of infection are actually what is called as eczema.

The type of eczema that is most common is the atopic dermatitis. The word “atopic” means hereditary, while “dermatitis” indicates inflammation of the skin. This type of eczema is often manifested as chapped cheeks as well as scaly patches on hands, arms, torso and legs among children. It is often hereditary and appears on the eyelids, hands or genitals or just about anywhere on an adult’s body. While atopic dermatitis may manifest itself on and off for no apparent reason, a change in weather could affect an appearance. Symptoms of hereditary diseases such as eczema could appear simultaneously. In the case of atopic dermatitis, the skin can be swollen, inflamed, and itchy at the same time while scaling, weeping and crusting are also occurring. People having this rash type may also have other allergies even if this is not necessarily a result of a reaction to an allergen. It is best to take note that this is not a communicable disease even if the pattern that it takes in spreading out may make it appear so.
Contact dermatitis is another type of rash, which is due to a substance that is a considered a skin irritant. This irritation can be caused by any number of things including contact with irritating chemicals as well as being an adverse reaction to substances. Poison oak or poison ivy can cause this rash type. Contact with strong cleaning products or gasoline that is prolonged could also cause this type of rash. Exposure to nickel contained in costume jewelry is also a frequent cause for the appearance of the rash. This rash type has been experienced by almost all people at some time in their lives. Ointments and other topical treatments are the usual remedy for such rash type. Avoiding the rash cause is also another prevention measure for the rash not to appear again.
Another rash type is that caused by bacteria or fungi infection. This is characterized by red, scaly patches of skin. Fungi is the most common cause for this type of sin rash. This has nothing to do with hygiene though as this could happen to clean people as much as it could happen to those who are not and contrary to misconceptions, this is not a highly communicable disease. You are not able to get this skin rash easily in locker rooms or gym showers or even on toilet seats. The treatment for this skin rash is usually the application of anti-fungal creams that are available in local drugstores even without prescription.
Another skin rash type is that caused by bacterial infection. It is best to be noted again that personal hygiene has little or no part at all in this type of skin rash. Prescribed topical creams and oral antibiotics are the usual treatment regimen for this skin rash. The medications that could be availed for rashes caused by fungal infection won’t work for this type of rash.
Viral infections could also cause rashes that are viral in type and they come with symptoms that are similar to that of herpes or the chicken pox as well as a number of other diseases. This is always not the case though because the rash could not be at all viral. There are quite a lot of diseases that has rashes as one of its symptoms though.
There are also rashes that come out as an allergic reaction to a certain drug. There are quite a number of persons who show adverse reactions to specific drugs and rashes usually appear days or weeks after the ingestion of the drug. Penicillin is one of the most common drugs that people are allergic to. Discontinuing the use of the drug is the most effective treatment for this type of skin rash. To soothe the itchiness of this type of rash, topical treatments could be bought over the counter of a local drugstore. A prescribed topical treatment may be recommended for extreme cases.
