One fact of life that is unavoidable is the fact that everyone remains at risk of having a stroke to one degree or another. So if you are doing what you can to bring down your risk factor you are using your common sense. There are ways that you can survive a stroke and one of them is to know that warning signs of a stroke that way you will know what to do if you or someone that you love ever has one. Early response time and early treatment in the event that you have a stroke are the two keys to minimizing damage and increasing your chances of survival.
Signs of stroke are a sudden numbness or a weakness in the face, arm or leg and if it the numbness only comes on one side of the body, most of the time this is accompanied by a slurring of or a difficulty in speech. Most of the time the people that are slurring or numb in the face want even notice it so it has to be pointed out by someone that looks and talks to them and can tell when something is wrong.
An individual that suffers from this problem will many times have half their mouth and cheek on one side of their face unusable and drooping. An elderly person can often become difficult and confused when sign such as these appear so it is important for you to be there for them during this time and keep them as calm as possible however let them know what is going on whenever you are moving around them. Sudden confusion is many times one of the stroke symptoms accompanied by suddenly having trouble understanding what is being spoken to them.
Another warning sign of a stroke is sudden trouble seeing in both eyes. If you notice that you or someone that you love is all of a sudden having trouble walking and has no balance and are having coordination problems this is also another signal of a stroke. A severe headache with no known cause is also linked to a stroke. The severe headache that accompanies a stroke is as severe as it gets, it is so bad that the patient will want to go to the hospital because of the headache alone.
These are all common signals that you or someone that you love is having a stroke but there are others as well. If you find an elderly person laying in bed that is totally unresponsive this could also be a sign of a stroke. Anything that you notice that is happening to your senses is a cause for concern. If you hear a pop and hear water running or have a ringing in your ear, or notice that you are smelling smoke it could also be a cause for concern. There are mild and severe strokes so remain watchful of yourself and your loved ones for the early warning signs of a stroke.
