An ovarian cancer shows symptoms months before the cancer cells are actually detected. It would not be diagnosed by just one or two tests. This is one of the main problems of early ovarian cancer detection.

The common symptoms of ovarian cancer are the swelling of the stomach and problems with digestion. These symptoms are easily dismissed because they are common and ovarian cancer is rarely associated with them. Unfortunately, in the US alone there are about 22,000 women who are afflicted with ovarian cancer and if detected at its early stages, ovarian cancer is treatable.

Less than 20% of the cancer in the ovaries is detected early. If detected and treated early, a woman could live for at least 5 more years. That is not the case though because most of the tests administered with regards to the symptoms would completely miss to look in the ovaries. Stomach imaging for example would not look at the ovaries at all, and stomach swelling may already be a symptom of ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer affects a small percentage of the women population. So every time a woman gets stomach aches, she should not think of ovarian cancer immediately. But if the problem persists and doctors could not find the cause of the symptom, then an ovarian cancer test should be performed. A woman should be responsible with herself. Detection of ovarian cancer is really hard. So she must pay attention more to her body and not just dismiss away any untoward incidents.

A woman’s survival from ovarian cancer relies on the early detection of the disease. Do not be complacent about any stomach aches or problems with the digestion. See a doctor and if the doctor cannot determine the cause of these, then strongly suggest that an ovarian cancer test be performed on you. Know also that, CA125 and ultrasound tests are not highly effective in determining ovarian cancer. In fact these tests have a hard time finding late stages ovarian cancer, how much more when it comes to the early stage ovarian cancers.

The women who are at high risk of acquiring ovarian cancer are those women who have the disease in their family background. If she has some relatives who got sick with it, then genetically, she is susceptible to ovarian cancer. Blood tests could help in detecting early stages of ovarian cancer but it is also known to provide false positive results, which could cause a lot of aggravation.
